| VISITING POMENE |
| Pomene Bay is an area of coastline that has become known as a beautiful destination for holiday travellers, fishermen and scuba divers. Part of Pomene's appeal is that it is remote and untouched. And is uneffected by crowds, cluttered roads and busy beaches, even during the peak holiday seasons. In 1964, before the civil war in Mozambique, Pomene National Park was established. And although the war had a devistating effect on the wildlife of the area, it has remained a National Park. This is one of the main reasons why the 200 square kilometres of Pomene are so sparcely populated. Therefore, the small community of Pomene have had very little effect on the environment, leaving Pomene as an almost pristine coastal reserve. Pristine untouched beauty is one of the reasons people enjoy Pomene so much. Another reason is that the marine life has been allowed to develop and grow naturally, resulting in spectacular fishing a scuba diving. |

GETTING TO POMENE Although Pomene is remote and feels far away, it's actually not as bad as it seems. The is a good transport system in place and you just need to decide which method best suits your requirements. BY ROAD: In the last year, driving through Mozambique has become very comfortable, compared to the potholed chaos of a few years back. The main road from Maputo, north till about Inhambane, has been completely rebuild and resurfaced. BY AIR The closest international airport to Pomene is in the city of Inhambane. Currently 3 airlines fly schedualed flights out of South Africa directly to Inhambane. Once you have cleared customs at Inhambane, Pomene Lodge run their own aircraft between Inhambane and Pomene. DRIVE OR FLY TO POMENE Deciding between flying or driving is the usual debate between cost and time. Flying will get you there quickly and hassle free but flights can be costly, especially if there is a group of you. Driving will definately cost you less, but a trip from Johannesburg could take you no less than 17 hours. It's not essential to drive with a 4x4 but the last 60km is a sand/gravel road to reach Pomene View. If you need to get down to the beach or go to Pomene Lodge, the 7km trip requires a 4x4. If you are driving a 2x4 but staying at Pomene Lodge, you may be able to leave your car at Pomene View and Pomene Lodge will collect you. |
